We are very excited to share with you something that the board has been working on for months! We are offering two $500 scholarships for deserving students in the Los Rios Community College District for Fall of 2019! Along with the scholarship, the students will also receive a free year of membership to AWIS and will get to attend our annual awards banquet and be recognized at the event. For more information or to apply for the scholarship you can visit the Los Rios website.
Back by popular demand for 2019! Are you interested in being a mentor or mentee? Our program is a low time committment (2-3 hrs per month for 3 months) with the potential for a very high impact. More specific details will be available soon. The kick-off event will be held on January 23rd at Bayer CropScience in Woodland. Check out our flyer below and be sure to apply through our Mentorship Program page on the website!
The newest endeavor kick started by the svAWIS group is a Lean In circle known as The STEM Cell. The group began after many ladies at the seminar hosted this spring expressed interest in forming our own circle. The kick off meeting was held at the end of June and focused on getting to know all the members, talking about our goals and desires for joining lean in, and deciding on which of the many topics available our circle should work on first. The first topic sessions were held at the end of July and focused on Taming Adrenaline (aka How to overcome anxiety surrounding public speaking). At this meeting, members discussed their trials and tribulations with public speaking, watched a couple informative videos discussing on-the-spot remedies and how to create a history of success with speaking, and had a chance to practice thinking and speaking on their toes.
We recently held our inaugural annual SacValley AWIS Open House event, which featured silent auctions, raffles, and informal networking. Thank you to everyone who participated in, or donated to, our very successful Open House event! We raised around $1,600 for the chapter, which will be put to good use in the coming year. A very special thank you to Marrone Bio Innovations in Davis, CA, for hosting our event! Students and professionals alike learned about life at large and small companies and networked at our recent event Careers in the Biotech Industry. We had a great time hearing from our keynote speaker Cate Dyer, panelist speakers, and representatives of local biotech companies. A big THANK YOU to ALL of our speakers as well as our co-host, Marrone Bio Innovations! Speakers & Panelists:
We had a great time volunteering at Sutterville Elementary's annual Science Night in Sacramento!
svAWIS members shared their passion for science with elementary school students by demonstrating the secrets of soap in the Rainbow Milk Explosion experiment. Simply add whole milk to a shallow plate with a few drops of food coloring. Compare what happens if you poke the liquid using a dry cotton swab (left) versus a cotton swab dipped in a bit of dish soap (right)! On November 19, 2015, we had a mentorship kick-off event hosted by Monsanto in Woodland. Mentors and mentees met one another and networked with other mentorship program participants over snacks and drinks while discussing their expectations for the program.
In our second mentorship event on February 25, 2016, we watched a TedX talk by Uche Ofodile on how successful women can replicate their success through mentoring, went over ways to improve mentorship skills, and played logic puzzles in groups. Uche's talk and mentorship slides are available in the Mentorship Program tab of this webpage. Logic Puzzles: We played a game where we split into pairs and one person was asked to build a duck out of legos and their partner was not allowed to see it. A picture was taken of the lego duck and the other partner now had to build the same duck based only on the instructions from their partner! It was a fun exercise on communication because the hardest part was explaining how to place the legos to build the duck to your partner. The pictures below are of the different ducks our groups made with roughly the same legos: |
