One of our board members, Erika Lee, was recently named as the Girl Scouts Volunteer of the month for September. To read the full article, check out this link: www.girlscoutshcc.org/en/for-volunteers/volunteer-spotlight.html.
Way to go Erika and thank you for your dedication to empowering, inspiring, and exciting the next generation of female scientists! About 40 women in science and their family members attended the 2019 AWIS-NCC summer picnic in San Mateo. We ate delicious tri-tip, played lawn games, and networked with members from the NCC including the East Bay, Palo Alto, and San Fransisco chapters. It was an excellent event with beautiful sunny weather. Left to right: svAWIS board members Jen (president), Vanessa, Ericka, Abbie, and Anne
The 2019 Mentorship Program has drawn to a close. At the finale, we had an intense spaghetti tower building competition with only one team building a tower that stood up without assistance at the buzzer. We also handed out certificates to those in attendance and collected feedback on the program so that we can make the 2020 program even better. Thank you so much to all the awesome mentors and mentees who participated this year! We hope you all learned and grew through these relationships.
A few svAWIS board and general members recently got involved as volunteers with the Girl Scouts STEM MakerSpace in Sacramento (https://www.girlscoutshcc.org/en/about-girl-scouts/STEMCenter.html). The space was built for the purpose of empowering girls to get excited and interested in STEM fields and includes opportunities for hands-on learning in many science and engineering categories. There are workshops offered after school hours and on weekends every week, from building an earthquake proof fort for a stuffed animal to coding robots to solving mysteries with forensic science to 3-D printing. We were blown away by the space and the vision they have to bring STEM education to girls in California. We look forward to getting even more AWIS members volunteering with this awesome organization in the future! The 2019 Mentorship Program Kickoff was held on January 23rd. About 45 mentors and mentees participated in networking bingo and "speed networking" discussion circles. We were so excited and overwhelmed by the number of people interested in the program and we can't wait to see the impact it has! A big thank you to our event sponsor Bayer CropScience for allowing us to use their site for this awesome event. |
