The Sacramento Valley AWIS Board acknowledges and stands against all forms of racism. The last few weeks have brought back to the forefront of our nation’s attention the racial inequality faced daily by many. Our society is traumatized by the systemic, institutional racism that pervades the structures that govern and rule. We all share the responsibility to end systemic racism. It requires a lifelong commitment.
While the Association for Women in Science has focused on breaking down the systemic barriers that limit the advancement, equity, and participation of women in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), we recognize that women of color in STEM, and Black women in particular, carry the burden of racism in everyday life, workplaces, and educational settings. It is critical that we as a STEM organization recognize their experiences and not let them stand alone.
We reaffirm our commitment to fostering an equitable and inclusive scientific enterprise, which includes confronting racism. We call on those in our network and the scientific community to take a stand.
We as a Board are constantly inspired by the energy, insights, and empathy of our members, and we commit to providing you resources for becoming agents of change.
Yours in Science and Social Justice,
The Sacramento Valley AWIS Board
